How to Reset Your Career

julieaverillshore
  • Bad Boss

  • No motivation

  • Hazy goals

  • Drifting from job to job

  • No strategic plan

  • Everything is a priority

  • Doing more with less

  • No guidance

Or, perhaps you sort of kind of love what you do and your current environment, you just don't love the current shenanigans, office politics, etc. of your current environment that are hindering your ability to be the best version of yourself?

I've heard it all- the reasons why people contemplate staying or leaving and begin to discern their next job or career move.

Ok- well you have a choice. You can choose to 'reset' your career priorities this week.

Here's how to get started:

  1. Make a list of your top 5 irritations at work- right here, right now.

  2. Next, break that list down as to the 'why':

    1. Is it not in your skill set?

    2. Are you missing information?

    3. Are you accountable for something over which you have no control?

    4. What is 1 thing that could make each irritation better?

  3. Determine 1 person to speak with about 1 of the irritations who can help you discern next steps one way or another (and by the way, this a person that you trust).

  4. Utilize LinkedIn for research and learning about something on your list.

    1. Is there a group to join for the topic, such as 'bad boss' or building a strategic plan on a budget, etc.?

    2. Next, actually join the group and start contributing.

  5. Schedule time - 30 minutes- each week- YES- each week- to walk and talk.

    1. Schedule a call with someone outside of your current organization- FOR ANY PURPOSE- who can give you guidance on a current challenge, to just reconnect, and/or to give or share information.

    2. Walking while talking gets the blood flowing and ideas moving, too!

It is in giving that we receive.

You are a gift.

You have gifts to use.

If there are barriers to you using your gifts that are a consistent challenge, consider these 2 questions:

  • What is the consequence of doing absolutely nothing?

  • Is fear or being comfortable holding you back? How? Why?

If you are feeling stuck and don't know how to reset, I'm here to listen.

No politics. No preconceived notions; only 25+ years' experience as a Human Resources professional, a Recruiter and Career Coach. I am respectful, kind, but honest.
