Emails. Calendars. Meetings. Family obligations. Running kids to activities. Dog walking. Social media scrolling. Job posting perusing.
You name it, I’ve heard it.
All the reasons why someone hesitates to start a job search.
Sometimes it’s about comfort. Sometimes it’s fear of the unknown. But what most people don’t realize is this:
There’s a cost to hesitation. And it’s not always visible...until it starts to wear you down.
The Invisible Costs of Staying Too Long in a job or career that is no longer a fit:
Sunday night dread
Monday morning snooze-fest that turns into rushing and stress
Skipping workouts that used to energize you
Missed opportunities that pass you by
Chronic stress that creeps into your relationships
Sleepwalking through your day with zero engagement and motivation
Diminished sense of value
Lower confidence
Family tension from bringing work frustration home
These costs don’t show up on a spreadsheet, but they’re real. And they compound over time.
The Lies We Tell Ourselves
“I won’t make as much money.”
“I’ll lose the flexibility I have now.”
“I work with great people. What if I don’t find that again?”
“My team needs me.”
“They won’t be able to replace me.”
And the list goes on.
But here’s the truth:
You have talents to share.
You are meant for more.
You are meant for different and new options in different seasons of your life.
You deserve to feel energized and fulfilled in your work.
Individuals in your community need YOU and what you have to offer; it just might be in a different way.
And just because something is new or different does NOT mean it's not a strength.
I’ve 25+spent years in career coaching, recruiting, and HR, and I can say with 100% confidence:
Everyone reading this has something valuable to offer.
Should You Stay or Should You Go?
Use this quick checklist to find out:
✅ I have at least 2–3 great days a week at work.
✅ I use my strengths most of the day.
✅ I wake up energized and engaged.
✅ I’d recommend my workplace to my best friend.
✅ I feel like I’m making a difference every day.
If you answered “No” to two or more, it’s time to ask:
Where are you being called next?
Do you know how to get there?
You don’t have to know what you want to do forever.
But you do owe it to yourself and those you love to figure out what you want to do next.
