How to Lean into Your Career Story To Get What You Want

Canned.

Rehearsed.

Inauthentic.

Hiding.

These are some of the reasons over the past 20 years I've seen candidates be eliminated from a hiring process.

The sad thing- they probably didn't even realize it.


There are a ton of 'free' resources out there that will offer you guidance on best in class resume templates, interview answers and more.


And while the intent is not bad in and of itself, the reality is this:

These templates nor AI can replace you being you.


And here's the clincher:

  • When you can start leaning into who you are as an individual and professional rather than trying so hard to be "the ideal candidate" and just be yourself, you will begin to see the magic happen.

  • THAT combined with networking will open doors like no other.


So, if you are in job search mode and have spent hours upon hours preparing ideal interview answers, sweating a LinkedIn post or comment, or editing your resume to then spend hours uploading it and hearing nothing, this blog is for you.


I challenge you to focus your time and energy on these 2 things in the coming weeks if you are in job search mode:

  • Networking

  • Telling your story authentically


Can you answer:

  • Who are you?

  • What do you stand for?

  • Why did you make each move you did?

  • What did you learn from it?

  • What do you feel aligned to and called to do next?

  • How do you want to contribute?

  • Do you want to contribute with purpose?

  • What are you proud of?

  • What disappointments have you had?

  • What skills, strengths and values do you want to lead with next?


As a recruiting advisor to MANY businesses over the years and job seekers, both sides put way too much pressure on the hiring process.


Instead, let's work together to:

  • Define the role as realistically as possible

  • And candidates- let's be clear on where you've been and what you're value proposition is going forward so you can be the obvious solution to an employer's need.


A job opening is simply a pain point in an organization;

it represents a need to make something happen or make it better.


And here is another cold hard truth- you are not a fit for every job and every organization.


And the sooner you as a job seeker can acknowledge this- your job search becomes WAY easier :-)


So, whether you are reading this as an active job seeker, a passive job seeker who simply is curious but committed to proactively owning their career, or an employer, I hope you can find a few nuggets in this blog, mainly:


  • Everyone has talents to share.

  • Those may shift from time to time and that's ok.

  • Sometimes you have to say no to old skills to take on the new.

  • Potential employees and employers should be prepared to tell 'their story' and explain their needs and what success will look like in this role next- not just in 90 days, but 6 months and beyond.


Be curious.

Be authentic.

Own your careers.
