The guise under which I accepted the job was not this.
I have no energy. I'm burnt out.
I have unfulfilled promises.
There is no vision; no strategic plan in place. How can I affect change?
My boss is a jerk.
The culture is toxic.
*These are just a few statements that I hear in a given week from clients.
Wow- end of summer- how did we get here?
Didn't the kids just get out of school?
Wasn't it just the 4th of July?
Time sure does seem to fly when we are having fun- as the saying goes.
how much fun Are you having at work?
If it feels lately like you've been spending more time watching the clock than having fun at work, that could be one indication you are at a career crossroads.
Here is a checklist to help you discern if you are potentially at a career crossroads:
Work simply isn't enjoyable anymore.
You have more frustrating days than good ones.
Your last few jobs have been similar in nature and nada- something seems off for you.
You feel as if your values, what you stand for today, are not being honored.
You have a drive to do more, serve more effectively, or lead differently.
You are tired of 'settling.'
Your talents are underutilized.
You know you could be more productive but you just aren't motivated. Frankly- you are disengaged.
AND... yes, that Sunday night dread is super real.
I always ask my career clients these additional questions:
Are you empowered to change your situation?
Are you striving toward common goals?
Who do you want to serve?
Is their a general tone of mutual respect between you, your boss and leadership?
If you have been thinking about a job change or career change for a while now, I'd encourage you to do these 3 things next:
Update your LinkedIn profile.
Dust off that resume.
Begin to develop your key accomplishment stories.
